about

***ENJOYED BEST ON HEADPHONES***

I recently helped my parents pack up my childhood home. It was also my father's childhood home so there was a lot of history and stuff to dig through. I couldn’t sleep the first night back and ended up staying up all night, writing. I took this photo in the front hall as the sun came up that first morning. I had never seen the sun like that in the house before.

Most of this song was written that first night, and the rest was finished in the weeks that followed as we packed up and prepared for the move. I recorded it in the new house before my folks moved in.

This is my first effort at self-recording and mixing. I rented some mics at the beginning of April and started messing around. I’ve learned a lot and had a ton of fun along the way. I wrote and recorded all the parts. In general there were a lot of takes and overdubs to get to this “finished” version, so on the last night the house was in our possession, I went back alone and restricted myself to a one-take, no overdubs, acoustic version as well. The reverb is all natural from the empty house.

The mixes are optimized for headphones because that’s how I did them. I eventually learned it’s generally better to mix for speakers/monitors first. Next time. They’re also unmastered, mostly because I don’t really know what mastering is.

I’m lucky to have a lot of music in my life these days and lots of songs taking shape around me. I’m looking forward to wrangling what I can and sharing more soon. :)

All the best,

Dave
